A Project Almost a Year in the Making

Remember this chair, or should I say set of chairs. My mom scored an awesome dining room set for me almost a year ago. For almost a year they have sat in my dining room needing to be redone. Well they are officially done! All 6 chairs! It is hard to tell in this picture (it’s the only one I have) but the old fabric looks cream. Upon re-doing these I found out that the fabric was actually blue once upon a time. They were just so old and faded you couldn’t tell.

I tackled my first re-upholstery project with BIG help from my mom. She told me I was a staple gun failure but I am confident my skills will develop. So finished project ta-da!

Beautiful right? I love it!Close up of the fabric. Classic.

10 Things That Rock My World Right Now

1. A co-worker and I have bonded over our love of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books. She is letting me borrow the third one after she finishes it tonight. Awesome!

2. My heat works. Yes the ancient heater that required a new fan to be shipped from California is now working. My apt. is toasty warm (mostly).

3. Getting compliments on clothes I thrifted from goodwill. I think I get the equivalent of a runner’s high from finding good deals on clothes.

4. Parks and Recreation. The second season is pretty much bomb and on netflix streaming. You may think that I have an abnormal relationship with my netflix but if you must know… we’re dating. It’s pretty serious.

5. My fantastic Mother who will spend the day with me even though I’m not always nice. She hems my pants that are always too long and is always willing to help me with my DIY projects. I don’t say it enough..thanks Mom!

6. Leftovers- yes I really said that. Those of you that know me know that I am terrible about eating leftovers. However lately, cooking for 1 leaves for a lot of leftovers with most recipes.I have come to appreciate being able to just grab that tupperwear container on my way out the door no lunch packing needed. Maybe that is why I keep oversleeping my alarm….

7. Girltalk. It is the perfect music to car dance to and to dance around your apartment alone to. Go ahead, try it I won’t judge. I even find myself grooving to this at my desk, a little chair dancing if you will, not to be confused with car dancing.

8. Finishing projects. Not ready to post about this particular project yet, well because it’s not really done. But I am so close. Next post. It feels awesome to get things checked off your running to do list.

9. Rain. Yes it’s gloomy out and it has gotten significantly chillier but I love the rain. It makes things feel like a fresh start and it always helps me sleep so sound.

10. Trader Joe’s Veggie Corn Dogs and fries. Comfort food people. I’m not a vegetarian but sometimes I eat like one and sometimes I enjoy a nice steak or hamburger. When it’s been a rough day, fries and a veggie corn dog do the trick.

Happy Sunday 2.20.11

It has been a busy week of visiting with friends, lots of catching up and even more food. Speaking of food, did I mention that my dear sweet mother got me a heart shaped waffle iron for Valentine’s Day. We had one just like this growing up, until it eventually broke. I am impressed by the yummy and cute waffles it has created 🙂 Anyone want to come over for brunch?

dove chocolates and conversation hearts

I have always ALWAYS loved valentine’s day, single in a relationship does not matter I love it. Maybe it is the red and the pink or dove chocolates and conversation hearts I really don’t know. There are tons of printable valentine’s day graphics floating around blog-land, this one speaks to me. Love is the buzzword of February but the reality is love is hard. Sometimes you really do just have to hold on for dear life because love regardless of  form is a journey. I can’t help but think about that scene from Love Actually “Ok Dad let’s go get the shit kicked out of us by love”. Sure I may not have a valentine this year but I have amazing friends and family that I love dearly, so this year valentine’s day is just a day to be thankful for the love I do have in my life.

Happy Sunday 2.13.11

This Christmas, in my stocking I received Bedside Blessings by Charles Swindoll. This book is simple enough one bible verse and a small paragraph to contemplate for every day of the year. Most mornings I try to read the thought for the day before even getting out of bed and give myself a moment to think about it and meditate before I begin my day. This was the verse for yesterday and the accompanying paragraph really spoke to me:

“It’s amazing how you can get carried away from worries, woes and self-concern when you start naming out loud what you’re thankful for. Right away your focus shifts from your needs to the Father’s grace and love — Try it”

So many times lately I wonder why and allow myself to get resentful over this stage in my life. But if I truly open my eyes to what God has provided for me I see quite clearly that I am blessed in so many ways.

the music list.

I am not a music connoisseur, I’ve never claimed to be. I leave that task to my better suited friends. Many of my favorite songs come from commercials or movies.  However I do have a playlist that has been my go to whenever I am in my car lately.

Scissor Sisters- Take Your Mama Out
Sara Bareilles- King of Anything
MIA- Paper Planes
Florence and the Machine- The Dog Days are Over
Kanye West- Love Lockdown
Rick James- Superfreak
Mika – Love Today
Sheryl Crow- Everyday is a Winding Road
Lady GaGa- Poker Face
AC/DC- If You Want Blood
Of Montreal- Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games
Alanis Morisette – You Outta Know
Superchik- One Girl Revolution
LMFAO -I’m in Miami Bitch

Is it a random play-list absolutely. However this play-list if full of songs to groove to, do a little car dancing and shout at the top of my lungs.

Me & Mrs. Lindbergh

After opting not to read the Bell Jar, I went to the library and picked up a copy of Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, a book completely different than the Bell Jar. This is a book that was recommended to me way back in October or maybe it was September I don’t remember. It is an excellent book and a quick read.

These are some of the little nuggets of truth and comfort I have learned from Mrs. Lindbergh:

“The most exhausting thing in life, I have discovered, is being insincere. That is why so much of social life is exhausting, one is wearing a mask.”

“All living relationships are in the process of change, of expansion, and must be perpetually building themselves new forms. But there is no single fixed form to express such a changing relationship.”

“Woman must come of age by herself. This is the essence of “coming of age” – to learn not to depend on another, nor to feel she must prove her strength by competing with another. In the past, she has swung between these two opposite poles of dependence and competition, of Victorianism and Feminism. Both extremes throw her off balance; neither is the center, the true center of being a whole woman, She must find her true center alone. She must become whole.”

“For we are, actually, pioneers trying to find a new path through the maze of traditions, convention and dogma.”

“When you love someone you do not love them all the time, in exactly the same way, from moment to moment. It is an impossibility. It is even a lie to pretend to. And yet this is exactly what most of us demand. We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life, of love, of relationships. We leap at the flow of the tide and resist the terror of its ebb. We are afraid it will never return. We insist on permanency, on duration, on continuity; when the only continuity possible, in life as in love, is growth, in fluidity – in freedom.”
